WEIGHT LOSS and NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

A supplement, by definition, is something that accompanies an essential. However, in some cases, nutritional supplements can themselves be an essential part of a healthy nutrition regimen.

Many people can benefit from nutritional supplements, be it because of a busy lifestyle or due to a genetic or physiological condition. Everyone requires a certain amount of vital biochemicals in order to function correctly. The proportions of these biochemicals vary within a very narrow range for almost everyone. Diet does not always supply the correct amounts, and even when a strict effort is made to eat properly there may be a shortage of important elements. Sometimes, maintaining rigorous exercise routines may deplete specific biochemicals faster than for other people. Sedentary lifestyles adopted by some people require less of certain nutrients. Every individual is unique and therefore requires a particular amount of some nutrients that will differ slightly from others.

The B-complex vitamins, for example, are essential for everyone. The proper amount will vary depending on weight and unique physiology of the individual. For some, an all-purpose daily vitamin supplement is enough to supply any needed amount of nutrients that are not obtained through eating a balanced diet. In most cases, the body is able to absorb what is needed and excrete the excess. Added amounts of specialized nutrients are a requirement for the health of some individuals- be it due to an inability to extract certain minerals and vitamins from foodstuffs, or for boosting the immune system in compromised individuals. Taking vitamin C once helped eliminate the danger of scurvy and rickets. That's rarely a problem in today's developed countries, but there is strong evidence to suggest that vitamin C helps to boost the immune system, which leads to fewer colds and infections. Sadly, past claims have overstated the facts, which has led to some cynicism regarding the importance of supplements.

Many people consume much less calcium as they age. To an extent, that is normal and healthy. Young adults do not usually require the amounts of calcium that are needed for proper bone development in young children or infants. Later in life though, individuals once again require a higher level of calcium. Bones become less able to manufacture the appropriate amount. For those who are lactose intolerant, or simply dislike the taste of milk, obtaining calcium in the form of a supplement is a convenient way to get the essential mineral and prevent (or at least slow) bone degeneration.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to the body because they help reduce inflammation and also prevent heart disease, amongst many other benefits. Unfortunately one of the main dietary sources of this essential component is fish- a foodstuff that is not suited to everyone's palate. Additionally, sometimes local fish supplies are unsafe or may have a reduced level of the nutrient due to environmental contamination or destruction. Here, a nutritional supplement is an excellent alternative.

There are dozens of supplements that can help to balance out hormonal deficiencies that many women and some men suffer from. Soy is a supplement that can help correct imbalances and in many women it also helps to relieve or reduce premenstrual complaints or menopausal symptoms. Thyroid imbalances, which may cause weight problems and emotional issues, may also be addressed through the use of specific supplements.

Another example of an effective supplement is cortisol. In some people, the gland that produces cortisol is weakened by disease, age or genetic condition. In such cases the resulting cortisol deficiency may result in fatigue, aching joints, and other symptoms. Taken in the proper amounts to correct this deficiency, cortisol may make a positive lifestyle difference to those affected.

Each person should undergo rigorous testing before taking anything more than an average daily vitamin or one of the more common supplements. You should note that some supplements have adverse effects on individuals who are sensitive to specific things. Ginko, for example, can lead to excessive bleeding in some. St John's Wort (used to relieve anxiety and depression) may actually deepen depression in some individuals. You therefore need to know which supplements are safe for you and if any are contraindicated. The guidance of your family doctor or health practitioner is essential in making proper and safe choices. Once you have this information, taking nutritional supplements may make the difference between mediocre and optimal health.
